Oleksandr Usyk's wife and coach issue first statements following his arrest in Poland: "Everything is fine"
Oleksandr Usyk's wife and coach recently spoke out for the very first time following the boxer's arrest in Poland. Usyk's wife asserted that the whole situation was a misunderstanding and he is free now. However, the Ukrainian's coach took a dig at the customs officials, claiming that they failed to perform their jobs.
For context, Usyk was held at Krakow airport in Poland. A video of him being led by police to an elevator while handcuffed has gone viral on the internet. The atmosphere didn't seem to be as hostile as the former undisputed heavyweight boxing champion appeared to be cooperative with the Polish police.
Boxing journalist Michael Benson took to X and shared the clip of Usyk being detained, writing:
''Oleksandr Usyk has seemingly been arrested at Krakow Airport in Poland today, though full information about the situation is currently unknown…''

Usyk was released following the intervention of Ukraine's Foreign Ministry, however, the Polish officials are yet to disclose the reason behind the heavyweight boxer's detention. Usyk's wife Katheryna Usyk recently took to Instagram and posted a status, writing:
''Thanks god, it's all fine. No one was arrested. Usyk is free. A misunderstanding.''
However, Usyk's coach Sergey Lapin didn't seem very happy about the situation. Lapin also posted an Instagram story, aimed at the Polish officials, writing:
''Don't worry, everything is fine. The cutom control service is neglecting its duties.''
Following his release, Usyk also took to social media to make his first public remark, writing:
''Dear Friends. A misunderstanding took place. It was quickly resolved. Thanks to all who got concerned. Thanks to Ukrainian diplomats for the efficient support. And respect to Polish Police for conducting their obligations with no regards to height, weight, reach and regalia.''
