Ranked UFC title contender throws down bold wrestling gauntlet for Islam Makhachev: “He can’t take me down, but I will”
UFC lightweight contender Mateusz Gamrot has shared his thoughts on a potential showdown against current 155-pound king, Islam Makhachev. Ahead of his upcoming fight, Gamrot recently had a chat with Jake Noecker of Home of Fight.
At one point during the interview, Gamrot was asked how a fight between him and Makhachev would unfold inside the octagon. The Polish fighter responded by hailing himself as the best wrestler at 155 pounds, and claimed that he would be able to take Makhachev down, but that the Dagestani would not be able to do the same to him.
The 33-year-old added that he wished for the champion to remain at lightweight so that the two could share the octagon in the near future. He said:
"In my opinion, I am the best wrestler in the lightweight division. Of course, Islam is super high-level and he always shows high-level skill but if I meet him in the cage, I think he can't take me down but I will and then it's gonna be a great scramble match-up, you know. I hope he doesn't go up division and stays in the lightweight division... Next year, we'll meet together and we'll see who is the best wrestler in the lightweight division."
