Sean Strickland started off 2023 strong in a light heavyweight bout against Nassourdine Imavov at UFC Fight Night 217. Strickland stepped in as a last-minute replacement against Imavov, who was supposed to face Kelvin Gastelum in a middleweight bout.

Gastelum couldn't make the fight as he suffered a mouth injury in the week of the fight. 'Tarzan' stepped in and the fight was contested at 205 pounds. Strickland's volume of punches proved to be effective as he won the bout via unanimous decision.

Sean Strickland, Israel Adesanya, Alex Pereira and Jared Cannonier found themselves fighting on the same card at UFC 276. Strickland faced Pereira while Adesanya met the challenge of Cannonier in his fifth title defense.

At the UFC 276 pre-fight press conference, Strickland went after Israel Adesanya. Normally, Adesanya is quick with his words and has a sharp tongue, but this time he seemingly struggled to form a rebuttle to Strickland's verbal onslaught.

Strickland faced current champion Alex Pereira at UFC 276, where 'Poatan' knocked 'Tarzan' out in the first round. The fight against Pereira marked Strickland's first loss at middleweight in the UFC.

Strickland didn't find redemption in his next fight against Jared Cannonier. 'Tarzan' met 'The Killa Gorilla' at UFC Fight Night 216, where he suffered a split decision defeat at the hands of Cannonier. Fortunately for Strickland, he was able to bounce back in his latest fight.
