The two had been exchanging words leading up to this. Nurmagomedov had been calling out the bantamweight king, but Dvalishvili was excited for a rematch with Sean O'Malley instead of fighting Nurmagomedov. Now that the fight is official, it will be Nurmagomedov's first as a title challenger.

The Dagestani fighter was last seen in action against Cory Sandhagen in August, where he clinched the victory by unanimous decision. Meanwhile, ‘The Machine’ became the 135-pound king by securing a victory against then-champion O'Malley at UFC 306 by unanimous decision in September.

Dana White shares the story of how Merab Dvalishvili vs. Umar Nurmagomedov was booked for UFC 311

It was clear that Umar Nurmagomedov would fight for the title next after his win over Cory Sandhagen, with the winner of Sean O'Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili being his next opponent. Since Dvalishvili became the champion, Nurmagomedov had been calling for the title fight and accusing Dvalishvili of ducking him.

But Dvalishvili said that Nurmagomedov didn’t deserve a title shot at the moment, claiming he would give O'Malley a rematch instead.

UFC CEO Dana White announced the fight between Dvalishvili and Umar Nurmagomedov along with other matchups for the UFC 311 card. He also shared the story behind how the fight got booked, saying:

''Merab came into the office late last night, told us that he is tired of listening to Umar disrespect him and wanted to make this fight happen as soon as possible. We called Umar, he was sleeping in Dagestan. He said, 'Hell yes, anywhere and anytime.'''
