How did Chael Sonnen first meet his wife?
Chael Sonnen married Brittany Smith, now known as Brittany Sonnen, in June 2013. The couple are parents to two children.
During an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani in February 2023, Sonnen recounted how he first approached Brittany. The couple's initial meeting occurred after one of his fights in Portland, Oregon. Sonnen admitted that while he was instantly drawn to her after their eyes met, his first attempt to connect with her was a complete failure.
However, undeterred, the former fighter-turned-analyst successfully obtained Brittany's contact information on his second attempt, using his gift of gab:
"I went up to her, and I said, 'Can I use your phone? My phone is dead. I gotta make a phone call.' She loaned me the phone, and I called myself. My phone wasn't dead; I put it on vibrate. I texted her back immediately and said, 'Careful who you loan your phone to. There are a lot of crazies out there.' Had the number. Took her out the next night, told her, 'I'm gonna marry you.'"
