“So much fun” - Mikey Musumeci gives Demetrious Johnson valuable BJJ pointers ahead of IBJJF World Master tournament
Mikey Musumeci has always been a proud teacher to anyone who asks him for Brazilian jiu-jitsu advice, including MMA legend Demetrious Johnson.
The reigning ONE flyweight MMA world champion has been hard at work in preparation for this black belt debut in the 2024 IBJJF World Master tournament on August 29 at the Las Vegas Marriott Convention Center.
A few days before the tournament, Johnson enlisted the help of ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion Mikey Musumeci and former UFC bantamweight world champion Aljamain Sterling.
Johnson visited Musumeci at Faito Tamashii Combat Club in Las Vegas, where 'Darth Rigatoni' often trains in his hometown.
Musumeci posted on Instagram:
"Insane training today with the homies @funkmastermma @mighty ❤️❤️ so much fun 😊 @ftcclv"
Demetrious Johnson is already one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time, and he holds the UFC record for the most consecutive world title defenses when he defended the UFC flyweight world title 11 straight times.
He then moved to ONE Championship in 2019, where his legacy exploded to supernova levels.
Johnson became the ONE Flyweight MMA World Grand Prix Champion in October 2019 and shared an intense rivalry with Adriano Moraes over the ONE flyweight MMA world title.
'Mighty Mouse' had a trilogy of fights over the flyweight MMA throne, and the American legend ultimately ended the rivalry with a unanimous decision win over Moraes at ONE Fight Night 10.
Demetrious Johnson raves about his sons' love for BJJ
Demetrious Johnson's newfound love for BJJ seems to be a family affair.
As he carved out a strong start to his professional BJJ journey, in which he has two golds in the IBJJF World Master and IBJJF Pans as a brown belt, his children also went with him.
In a conversation with fellow ONE Championship great Angela Lee, Johnson recalled how his children quickly fell in love with the craft with him.
"When you grapple my kids, all three of them do jiu-jitsu. My oldest loves to compete in jiu-jitsu. My middle [one], he doesn't like to deal with the pressure. He doesn't like dealing with losing."
