Charles Oliveira is currently riding an 11-fight win streak, topped off by wins against title contenders Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje.

Meanwhile, Makhachev is riding a 10-fight win streak of his own, but is yet to face a top five-ranked contender. The Dagestani's most notable victories came over Drew Dober, Dan Hooker and a budding Arman Tsarukyan back in the day.

Charles Oliveira claims Islam Makhachev rode Khabib Nurmagomedov's hype to a title shot

Charles Oliveria has never minced his words about not wanting to grant Islam Makhachev a title shot before he faced elite competition. 'Do Bronx' was adamant that the Dagestani should face Beneil Dariush in a title eliminator before making a bid for UFC gold.

However, the matchup was booked and is set for Abu Dhabi. That's despite Oliveira expressing Brazil as his preference. As their UFC 280 contest approaches, 'Do Bronx' continues to deem Makhachev undeserving of a title shot.

According to Oliveira, Makhachev's opportunity has been granted courtesy of Khabib Nurmagomedov, who has been vigorously promoting his protege. The Brazilian said in an episode of UFC Embedded:

“He is very smart with his game. However, he’s been surfing a wave that’s not his, but Khabib’s. That’s the truth. This match is happening because Khabib made it happen. Not by Islam’s own merit. Because in my opinion, he should be fighting a ‘top five’ contender. Who’s the ranked contender that Islam fought? No one.”
