UFC 5 gameplay: What do the initial reviews of the game tell us about the changes in the highly anticipated game?
The UFC game's latest edition, UFC 5, has its much-awaited release scheduled for October 27, 2023. And with just days left before release, the reviews are in from all the early access gameplay.
The developers have taken full advantage of the three-year gap between UFC 4 and UFC 5 to usher in many new features.
A prominent aspect of the fight gameplay is an improved and realistic damage system. The essence of this feature is that a particular strike or kick will reflect on an opponent. For example, a kick to the leg will make your opponent limp in pain. A cut to the eye or in the face region will hinder a fighter's defense, and a wounded nose will affect stamina.
The new seamless submissions also make for an enjoyable experience as fighter ratings now make a significant difference, and a gulf in quality can be seen between the two fighters in their movements and range of shots.
Other new features include cinematic KO replays that will help players relive the art of a finish in slow motion from multiple angles. For the first time, in-game doctor stoppages and checks will ensure that the medical aspect of the sport is well-represented in the game.

UFC 5 will create an authentic and immersive MMA experience
UFC 5 will redefine a mixed martial arts fan's gaming experience.
According to Nate McDonald, the game's Lead Producer, the new Frostbite engine is on full display, and the newer generation consoles perfectly simulate the game's mechanics and visuals. In a press release from the developing studio, he said:
“UFC 5 offers an intensely realistic fighting experience, harnessing Frostbite’s power and technology. From our Real Impact System that helps maximize the power of the generational hardware leap, to the enhanced lighting, detailed characters, strand-based hair and face animation system, every aspect is upgraded. Our collaboration with UFC delivers an unparalleled and authentic MMA interactive experience.”
Featherweight champion and cover star Alexander Volkanovski echoed the same sentiments about the game's incredible immersion. He said:
"UFC 5 captures all the sweat, blood and commitment that it takes to be successful in the Octagon. Trust me, the level of immersion that EA SPORTS has recreated with this game is the ultimate representation of the sport."
