WWE News: UFC Light Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier wants to take on WWE US Champion Kevin Owens
What’s the story?
The Prize-Fighter and the current WWE United States champion Kevin Owens has been called out by the reigning UFC Light Heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier, for a professional wrestling match.
In case you didn’t know...
UFC is a mixed martial arts promotion company based in America, overseen by president Dana White.
Founded in 1993, its sole purpose was to seek out the most effective martial art while imposing minimal rules on its competitors. The UFC’s popularity has skyrocketed over the last few years, which has seen it become a global juggernaut in the MMA industry.
WWE wrestlers have gone up in the UFC a couple of times. Brock Lesnar was under contract with the company during his match with Mark Hunt at UFC 200, and CM Punk tried his hand in the UFC, only to be beaten in 2 minutes and 15 seconds by Mickey Gall at UFC 203.
The heart of the matter
Current Light-Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier, who successfully defended his title against Anthony Johnson on Saturday at UFC 210, has always openly expressed his love for professional wrestling and the WWE.
During an interview with Fightful, Cormier was asked if he would ever consider a match in the WWE, to which he answered;
“I mean, if the UFC would let me I’d do a one-off, yeah. I like KO, man. I’d like to go put some work with KO, a hard-hitting match. I may get to punch him a couple times and he might be durable enough to not, like, fold over, you know?”
During the interview with Brandon Howard, Cormier also gave Seth Rollins’ name as a potential candidate for a match, stating;
“I think Seth Rollins is the best worker, and he’s my friend. So, Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens.”
Cormier’s friendship with Rollins was confirmed when the two shared tweets after the former’s latest victory;
Seth we got em baby!!!! Money in the bank!!!!champtochamp thank you brother https://t.co/7cszLqiAfG

Kevin Owens, on the other hand, hasn’t responded to DC’s comments yet.
What next?
As both competitors are contracted to their respective companies, it is unlikely that we’ll see this ‘dream match’ anytime soon.
In the meantime, Kevin Owens has his hands full with the first defence of his United States Championship coming against his old friend Chris Jericho at Payback in San Jose, California on April 30th.

On the UFC side of things, Daniel Cormier’s next fight hasn’t been announced yet, but many are expecting it to be against the former LHW champion Jon Jones.
Author’s take
Even though I would ideally like to see a bigger name such as McGregor or Rousey grace a WWE ring, those possibilities seem unlikely so a match such as this might be the way forward.
Although certainly not a draw the size of the two names, Cormier is a UFC champion and his name still carries some sense of gravitas.
Even though UFC and WWE joint match would have to be considered extremely unlikely, the money making possibilities of this venture must surely turn Vince’s head, even if only slightly...
