UFC removes seven fighters in latest roster purge, Cuban Olympian and ranked flyweight among subtractions
The UFC has made significant roster cuts, parting ways with seven fighters, including heavyweight Robelis Despaigne and flyweight Matheus Nicolau.
This latest purge follows reports from the UFC Roster Tracker, indicating that fighters may be removed from the online roster, but this does not always imply a permanent release. Some may be on hiatus, suspended, or dealing with injuries.
Among those let go is Jesse Butler, who faced a first-round knockout loss to Jim Miller in his promotional debut and subsequently lost to Brad Katona in a bantamweight bout.
Despaigne, once seen as a promising prospect, suffered back-to-back defeats after a strong start, while Charalampos Grigoriou also failed to secure a win in his two UFC appearances. Nicolau, a notable name with a four-fight winning streak, saw his tenure end following three consecutive losses.
Daniel Pineda, a veteran with a long history in MMA, announced his retirement after a recent loss. Jessica Penne, a former title challenger, was among those who had not seen success in recent outings.
UFC clears 2021 'DWCS' alum Jake Hadley from roster
The UFC continues to reshape its extensive roster, announcing the release of Jake Hadley, who earned his contract through a submission victory on 'Dana White's Contender Series' in 2021.
Hadley confirmed his departure on October 23, mentioning that he was not “cut” but rather that his contract had simply ended.
In his statement, Hadley reflected on the risks he took in his last two fights, stating:
“I wasn’t cut my contract came to an end, took 2 big risks in my last 2 fights being a company man and it bit me on the arse. Took block head on a weeks notice but missed the weight which was obviously held against me”
He also mentioned stepping in to fight Cameron Smotherman on short notice after initially preparing for a wrestling-based opponent. Hadley lost that fight by unanimous decision at UFC Vegas 99 despite entering the bout as a -500 betting favorite.
Hadley, who became the first fighter to miss weight and subsequently sign with the promotion after 'Contender Series' Season 5, expressed confidence in his ability to return to the promotion if he chooses. He stated:
“If I choose to work way back to the UFC, I know I can do that again no problem.”
