UFC veteran explains why he's leaning towards Paulo Costa over Khamzat Chimaev
After months of doubt, reports are suggesting that Paulo Costa has finally signed a new deal with the UFC and a fight against Khamzat Chimaev is likely on the cards. However, one veteran believes the Brazilian may come out on top.
'Borrachinha' has been at odds with the UFC for some time now and was pushing for a move away from the octagon to pursue a career in boxing. While a change of sport may still be possible down the line, his new bumper contract means the middleweight will continue to compete in the cage for the foreseeable future.
In response to rumors pitting Paulo Costa against Khamzat Chimaev, former UFC competitor Josh Thomson claims that the South American has the perfect style to counter 'Borz.' He recently expressed that Costa could ultimately get his hand raised if they did fight, saying:
"[Paulo Costa vs. Khamzat Chimaev?] I think that's a great fight for him. Because he's not easy to take down and he's got power in his hands. He's just got to come in shape. I think that's a great fight for him and he'll push Chimaev."
Despite back-to-back setbacks in fights against Israel Adesanya and Marvin Vettori, Costa has been a sensation under the UFC banner. Following both losses, the 31-year-old managed to get back into the winners' column against Luke Rockhold and can now look at forcing his way into another title fight.

Is Paulo Costa Khamzat Chimaev's next fight?
Khamzat Chimaev finds himself in a strange situation at present. It seems the surging prospect—along with the fans—are unsure as to what weight class he will be competing in from here on out.
Initially, 'Borz' was set to go on a welterweight title run. Dana White has since insisted that the European will no longer compete at 170 and will instead have to make a home in the middleweight division.
While there are a number of fighters available for Chimaev's move back to 185lbs, a lightning clash against Paulo Costa could be in the works. Following their altercation at the UFC PI, the two fan-favorites have both indicated their interest in a potential matchup that could go down sooner rather than later.
