Speaking to Marc Raimondi of ESPN MMA, Kevin Lee noted that the fight is a big moment for the sport, although it is just starting to pick up steam, before stating:

"I think that Volkanovski is a live dog. I think he can pose some real serious threats. I think he can really challnege Islam in ways that he ain't necessarily been challenged before. I think when you're going against a smaller guy like that, it's harder to track them down. It's harder to pin them so if it gets out of that first two rounds, I see Volkanovski starting to rack up some points.

Lee added:

"He's extremely experienced, espeically in a five round fight. He's had Max Holloway throw a thousand God d**n punches at him and he never really went away. He never backed off. So, I think it'll be a tough fight. I don't know. He's a live dog. I'm not going to say who's going to win or lose, but Islam better be taking him very serious."

Volkanovski will have a chance to become just the fifth double champ in UFC history if he is able to emerge victorious. Makhachev will have an opportunity to become the No.1-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the promotion.

Alexander Volkanovski questions Islam Makhachev's resume ahead of UFC 284

Islam Makhachev has been criticized for his path to the lightweight title as he did not face a top-ten opponent before receiving a title opportunity. Alexander Volkanovski is the latest to question his resume, as he stated:

"I believe he definitely deserves to be up here. He's a great fighter. I mean, you probably look at the resumes, it's still a good resume, but it's probably not as good and as deep as some of ours, but at the same time when it comes to skill, he's definitely right up there."

Makhachev has previously accused the top fighters in the division of ducking him. While the lightweight champion has been criticized for his lack of top-ten victories, it is clear that his talent outweighs his resume.
