"Uno mas," "Grab the WAR hat" - Fans react to Dustin Poirier dropping major hint at potential octagon return with cryptic "I'm coming" message

Dustin Poirier has put forth an apparent signal regarding his much-awaited possible return to the octagon. Fight fans soon chimed in on Poirier's hint, with many speculating about who his opponent could be.

Poirier is coming off a fifth-round submission defeat against UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev whom he faced in June 2024. It marked the Louisianian's third unsuccessful attempt at capturing the undisputed UFC lightweight title, having previously lost via submission to then-undisputed champions Khabib Nurmagomedov (2019) and Charles Oliveira (2021).

Over his past few fights, Poirier has publicly spoken about contemplating retirement from the sport of MMA. He even hinted at retirement during his post-fight octagon interview after losing to Makhachev.

Nevertheless, 'The Diamond' has occasionally hinted at returning, possibly for a couple more fights. Poirier's next opponent hasn't been officially announced yet, but he's now tweeted:

"Got something planned for you, hold on. I'm coming"

Fans weighed in on Dustin Poirier's aforementioned tweet, with many suggesting that the former interim UFC lightweight champion was indeed teasing the announcement of his next fight. Nevertheless, some questioned whether it was fight-related news or a non-combat project. One X user tweeted:

"Don't you dare launch a memecoin"

Another fan seemingly alluded to Poirier potentially competing one last time:

"uno mas"

Others speculated on who he could be fighting. One commenter accused him of evading Rafael Fiziev:

"Stop ducking fiziev"

Moreover, many others made allusions to featherweight kingpin Ilia Topuria's recent hint that he'd like to move up in weight and capture the UFC lightweight title. Topuria is apparently willing to fight top contenders at lightweight before going for the belt.

Well, several observers proposed that Poirier could welcome 'El Matador' to 155 pounds, something he seems open to. An X user asserted:

"Please fight Topuria and knock him out"

Another fan cheered Dustin Poirier on for his expected comeback and tweeted:

"Grab the WAR hat and que James Brown!! Let's go!!!!"

Dustin Poirier addressed a potential opponent list for his next UFC fight after losing to Islam Makhachev

On the Anik & Florian podcast back in July 2024, Dustin Poirier spoke to UFC play-by-play commentator Jon Anik and former UFC fighter Kenny Florian. Anik notably listed a few fighters, some of whom Poirier has already fought, as possible candidates for the Louisianian combatant's return.

The names were: Nate Diaz, Conor McGregor, Alexander Volkanovski, Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira, and Colby Covington.

The 35-year-old responded by implying that if and when he does fight, his opponent might be one of the aforementioned fighters.

"100 percent ... Yeah, for sure. If I do fight again, and when I do fight again, it'll definitely be one of those guys you just said."
