Vicente Luque set to compete in a high-risk fight at UFC Atlantic City
Vicente Luque returned to competition in August 2023 after recovering from a serious injury sustained during his fight with Geoff Neal. He defeated former UFC lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos to get back in the win column and looked primed to continue with an upward trajectory.
Luque was set to take on rising contender Ian Garry at UFC 296. The fight was a great opportunity for Luque to reach a broader fan base as the controversies surrounding Garry's personal and professional life had brought a lot of eyeballs to it.
However, Garry suffered from a severe case of pneumonia and had to pull out of the fight a few days before the event. The UFC moved on from the matchup and Luque was booked to fight wrestling powerhouse Sean Brady on March 30.
The welterweight clash was expected to headline the UFC Atlantic City event but Brady suffered an injury that forced him to pull out. Joaquin Buckley replaced him and the fight was moved down to the co-main event slot.
Buckley, a former middleweight contender, dropped to welterweight in 2023 and currently holds a 2-0 record in the UFC's 170-pound division.
Although he is relatively new to the division, 'New Mansa' possesses lethal finishing ability that Luque must be careful about, especially as he will be putting his No. 11 spot in the rankings on the line.
