"We love writing ourselves into a corner" - When Robert Downey Jr. explained to Joe Rogan Marvel's decision to make Hulk "smart"

Robert Downey Jr. defended Marvel's creative team when Joe Rogan questioned the character development of Hulk. The Incredible Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo, who was previously all brawn and no brain, turned smart in Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Joe Rogan asked Downey Jr., who plays Iron Man in the Marvel franchise, about the same on an episode of JRE dating back to January 2020. The two-time Academy Award nominee defended Marvel's writers and the Russo brothers (who directed Avengers: Endgame), claiming that they like the challenge of writing themselves into a corner.

Downey Jr. explained that writers get breakthrough ideas from the challenge of bringing out a character from the confines they themselves have created. The Sherlock Holmes star told Joe Rogan:

"This is the genius of the people who break and shape stories over there. Feige and his team, they go, 'Uh, he's Hulk, then he's not Hulk, he's Hulk, it's a big battle. Oh, he's so conflicted. What if he could meet himself in the middle. And then what corner have we painted ourselves in by having him meet himself in the middle? Because if that doesn't work, you can't go back to the way it was.'"

He continued to explain:

"So I just think that the real genius of the Marvel creative team and the Russo brothers... is they go, 'We love writing ourselves into a corner. We love it.' Because then it activates all of those, 'how do we get out of purgatory juices and then you get the next right idea."

Joe Rogan reveals which Marvel character he dislikes the most

Joe Rogan recently went off on a Marvel character during an episode of JRE featuring regular guests Ari Shaffir, Tom Segura, and Bert Kreischer. While talking about Clint Barton, the UFC color commentator brought up the character Hawkeye, played by the Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner.

One of the six original Avengers, Hawkeye's strength is that he doesn't miss with his arrows, even on no-look shots. However, Rogan finds the character bleak in comparison to other Marvel heroes and believes that his ability is bound to have some pragmatic restrictions. The 55-year-old said:

“I got to say, I f**king hate Hawkeye though. That stupid Marvel character, all he has is a bow and arrow. It’s so dumb, everybody else is The Hulk and they f**king can do crazy sh*t. Dr. Strange can summon other universes and this dude is just shooting sh**ty arrows at aliens. There’s aliens flying around in spaceships and he’s shooting arrows at them. Like that’s so dumb. He never runs out of arrows. It infuriates me.”
