“We are ready!” - Mikey Musumeci wraps up training camp with BJJ legend ‘Cobrinha’ Charles ahead of ONE 167
Mikey Musumeci is ready to exact his revenge against old tormentor Gabriel Sousa.
The reigning ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion recently wrapped up his training camp ahead of his grudge match against Sousa at ONE 167 on June 7 at Impact Arena.
Musumeci will bump up to bantamweight to face the last man who beat him in competition and reignite his rivalry against Sousa in Bangkok.
In an Instagram post, Mikey Musumeci revealed he finished his training camp under BJJ legend Rubens 'Cobrinha' Charles in what he often described as one of the hardest things he did in his career.
He wrote:
"We are ready! Just finished my last week of preparation for my match in two weeks in Thailand @onechampionship with my professor @cobrinhacharles ❤️. It's been a few months now that I have been driving every week for five hours to train and learn from him and the amount of progress we have made is insane."
Musumeci added:
"We worked really hard and are so excited to show you guys what we have been developing, and also to learn what we need to do more of (the main reason I compete!) Jiu-jitsu isn't about titles or wins for us, it's about constant evolution, constant improvements in our jiu-jitsu. The wins and titles are an indirect result of our focus! So grateful to do what I love every day, and for the people in my life. Thank you to everyone who supports me, blessed for you all. Let's do this!!! 🍝🍝"
Musumeci's revenge fight against Sousa, and the entire ONE 167 card, is available live and free to all Prime Video subscribers in the United States and Canada.
Gabriel Sousa thanks Mikey Musumeci for moving up to bantamweight
Gabriel Sousa initially thought his last fight against Mikey Musumeci was the only time he would cross paths with 'Darth Rigatoni'.
Well, he thought wrong.
In an interview with Vitor Freitas Comunica, Sousa said he was impressed Musumeci agreed to move up to bantamweight and run it back at ONE 167.
"But the 66kg was perfect. I even thank him for agreeing to move up in weight to fight with me. It impressed me, because I didn't expect this to happen. I thought we would just do that fight."
Musumeci and Sousa first faced off at Who's Number One in 2021.
