What Demetrious Johnson is grateful for this holiday season
Demetrious Johnson is a simple guy who likes simple things. Socks, underwear, and the occasional Steam gift card. Discussing his Christmas wish list with ONE Championship, ‘Mighty Mouse’ said:
“Nothing really. I don’t really ask for anything for Christmas. For me, I’m grateful for my health, my wife, and my kids. I always loved getting Steam video game gift cards, clothes, socks, and underwear.
“The things that I want that I don’t really get are watches and sh*t like that, which I don’t expect my family members to give me. My wife always surprises me with what I need. But I don’t really need anything.”
Demetrious Johnson is also quite fond of world championship gold, but he’s more than capable of taking titles instead of asking for them. He did exactly that in August at ONE Championship’s premiere Amazon Prime Video event. Johnson delivered an epic fourth-round flying knee against former flyweight king Adriano Moraes to capture the crown, once again reminding the world why he is one of the pound-for-pound greatest fighters in the world.
Johnson will have the opportunity to close out his rivalry with Moraes in May when he headlines ONE on Prime Video 10, alongside his division rival in front of a live crowd at the 1STBank Center in Colorado.
Demetrious Johnson’s MMA journey to greatness had a lonely beginning
Demetrious Johnson is one of the most-recognized names in mixed martial arts today. After more than a decade of dominance across multiple promotions, Johnson is surrounded by some of the best the sport has to offer, but it wasn’t always like that. ‘Mighty Mouse’ recalled the lonely beginning of his MMA career, revealing that, for quite some time, he was on his own at the gym.
"I think, when you’re in high school, you kind of like ... you’re still hanging out with your high school buddies, which I was. But when I took the step to do mixed martial arts, it was me and another gentleman. Nobody else."
Johnson continued:
"So with that being said, the other gentleman who did mixed martial arts with me, he dropped out, so it was just me. So all the people I know to this day, I did not know in high school. It was basically me going to the gym saying, ‘Hey, what’s up? My name is Demetrious Johnson, and I love martial arts, and I love Jean-Claude Van Damme.’"
