When is Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson? Rescheduled date, reason for postponement and more
The Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match was officially announced in March 2024. The fight was announced to be streaming platform Netflix's first foray into the world of live sporting events, with the bout scheduled to take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on July 20, 2024.
The announcement drew mixed reactions from the combat sports community. On one hand, fans rejoiced at the prospect of witnessing the legendary Tyson compete in his first professional boxing match since June 2005. On the other hand, many expressed concerns over the 30-year-plus age differential between Tyson and Paul.
Tyson's last boxing match was an exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr. in Nov. 2020. While he has been training for years, he hasn't been competing on a professional level and is in his late fifties.
On May 27, 2024, The New York Post reported that per information first provided by In Touch Weekly, Tyson suffered a health scare on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles on May 26. Medical personnel attended to him, and it was subsequently declared that he was "doing great." The former undisputed heavyweight champion was afflicted by an ulcer flare-up.
Rumors were rife that the incident could jeopardize the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight. As indicated in a report by USA Today, those rumors proved true days later. On May 31, 2024, it was announced that their fight was postponed and would be rescheduled to a new date.
As reported by ESPN, Tyson's representatives confirmed it. Their statement noted that Tyson underwent medical evaluation after the incident and was advised to undergo just light training for a few weeks before returning to his full-fledged training regimen.
Meanwhile, Tyson acknowledged the ulcer flare-up, his withdrawal from the July 20 event and the fight's postponement. He maintained that he was in good shape and warned that the delay has bought Paul some time, adding that he'll eventually knock the YouTube star out. An excerpt from Tyson's statement, as provided by Paul's Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), read:
"I appreciate everyone's patience and can't wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year."
Jake Paul, too, put forth a statement via MVP. 'The Problem Child' underscored that he supported the decision to postpone their matchup, as he wants to fight Tyson at his best. Paul vowed to secure a "sensational finish" in their "once-in-a-lifetime" showdown.
