When UFC fighter's corner advised him to use mushroom-induced fighting strategy: Throwback

In a 2021 UFC fight, Daniel Rodriguez's corner surprised fans when they overheard them instructing their fighter to use a kick they had practiced whilst under the influence of mushrooms.

Rodriguez faced fan favorite Mike Perry at UFC Vegas 23 and won the bout via unanimous decision. Their fight is notorious, however, for the advice given to 'D-Rod' by his coaches in between rounds. After a fairly evenly contested match in which both men traded blows, Rodriguez's corner identified that 'Platinum' had left himself open for a spinning kick.

The corner relayed that information to the 36-year-old between rounds but made sure he knew what they meant by stating it was a spinning kick they had practiced whilst taking mushrooms. The cornerman said:

"Remember that kick from the ranch when we were on mushrooms? The spinning kick. Throw that sh*t."

Following his victory over Mike Perry, Daniel Rodriguez spoke to Brett Okamoto of ESPN, who asked him about the unique advice. Rodriguez laughed off the question and stated that when he took the mushrooms, he was practicing a host of wild MMA moves:

"I'm gonna be real, this one time we were on mushrooms and I was doing some weird crazy spinning karate stuff. We've been working on this, it's pretty much a heel kick. He wanted me to throw it but I was having so much success with my hands I didn't do it. You'll probably see it one day, the mushroom kick! The mushroom kick!"

UFC welterweight Ian Garry predicts upcoming fight against Daniel Rodriguez

Ian Garry is considered to be one of the most talented rising stars in the UFC. The Irishman remains undefeated in the welterweight division (11-0) and has so far won all four of his UFC bouts since making his debut in 2021.

The 25-year-old is now scheduled to face heavy-hitting Daniel Rodriguez next month at UFC Fight Night 224. Rodriguez is considered a serious step up in the competition and poses the biggest threat to Garry's undefeated run.

'The Future' shows no signs of anxiety or doubt about the outcome. Ian Garry was recently interviewed by Peter Carroll and made a bold prediction about the upcoming clash with 'D-Rod.' According to Garry, he's planning on knocking him out:

"This is the first fight in a while where I get to study, like genuinely allow my brain to do what it f***ing does, which is just be so intelligent. This is why my fight IQ is so much greater than everybody else. My brain will just tick and I've already got the map in my head."

He added:

"I can tell you how I'm gonna knock him out. Right high kick... If I knock him out with anything else, I didn't mean it. That's the only shot I want. That's the knockout I want, right high kick. I want him stiff on his back."
