Boxing Super Middleweight Overview
Famous fighters like Joe Calzaghe, André Ward, and Carl Froch have established themselves in this division. Super middleweight was one of boxing's most active divisions at the end of the 2000s and the beginning of the 2010s.
The Super Six World Boxing Classic on Showtime, which sought to identify the best super middleweight in the world at the time, served as a showcase for this. Later, in late 2011, Andre Ward won the competition by a unanimous decision over Carl Froch. Canelo Alvarez became the division's first undisputed champion on November 6, 2021.
History of the Super Middleweight Class in Pro Boxing
In the late 1960s, the middle of the 1970s, and the beginning of the 1980s, there was interest in a middleweight-light heavyweight division. A "Super Middleweight" division was later established by the unofficial World Athletic Association (WAA) at 168 pounds after a few states briefly recognized a "Junior Light Heavyweight" division at 167 pounds (76 kg).
The WAA's first super middleweight title fight was then won by Jerry "Wimpy" Halstead over Ron Brown on April 3, 1982, in Denver, Colorado, after six rounds.
In 1984, Murray Sutherland beat Ernie Singletary to win the International Boxing Federation's version of the super middleweight championship, which marked the start of the current division. When Chong Pal Park, the 1987 Lineal champion, defeated Jesus Gallardo, the World Boxing Association established its version of the super middleweight title.
Since the early 1990s, the super middleweight division in Britain and Ireland has been extremely competitive. This includes the rivalry between Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, and Michael Watson, which featured two memorable fights and a tragic injury to Watson.
Then, Steve Collins emerged and dethroned Benn and Eubank before retiring and vacating the title. Joe Calzaghe also held the title for ten years.
