Revisiting the chat show appearance that influenced Joe Rogan to start his own podcast: "We need to figure out how you make money from this"
Joe Rogan once appeared on a talk show with a fellow entertainment industry veteran. He later cited it as a major motivation to start his own podcast, the JRE (Joe Rogan Experience).
Back in 2007, the actor, stand-up comedian, reality TV host, and UFC color commentator featured on Tom Green's web show. The show subsequently came to be known as 'Tom Green's House Tonight.' Many believe it was one of the early, comparatively well-organized, podcast-like online programs.
Green, a Canadian-American actor, filmmaker, comedian, and musician hosted Rogan on the show. The friends toasted to the unique setting and also communicated via a video call with another individual who was in a different location. Apparently addressing the environment, Rogan stated:
"I think this is f**king awesome."
Green and Rogan appeared to concur that it was better than the traditional talk show setting that's marred by major networks in the television and radio realms due to time, managerial, and other constraints. Rogan said:
"This is way better ... Well, not only that, there's also no corporate pressure. See, the thing that f**ked up television, the thing that f**ked up entertainment in general is money. They were selling advertising, so everybody has to say certain words, don't say certain words, don't bring up certain subjects.
"You can't just express yourself because you're expressing yourself to someone who's selling advertising space. And that's all it is, and that f**ks up everything. It doesn't make anything good."
Green jestingly opined that they need a "f**ked up advertiser" to sponsor them. Rogan then chimed in by saying:
"This, you just need to keep doing this. This, we need to figure out how you make money from this."
Green then proposed a "national interweb" featuring creative people on the internet linked to each other. The duo agreed that they needed a "portal" into the advertising revenue stream.
They seemingly referenced the major corporations helming the TV and other entertainment platforms and opined that though they occasionally give them jobs and money, an independent platform to express oneself is important for creative people. Rogan said:
"They don't need to exist. They're non-creative people. We've talked about this before the show. They're non-creative people who are controlling creative things, and they wanna have their input, and it's f**king maddening."

Joe Rogan expressed his gratitude toward Tom Green while hosting him on the JRE podcast
On JRE's episode 2108 in Feb. 2024, Joe Rogan hosted Tom Green, who'd also ventured into podcasting. Rogan has often credited many entertainment professionals like Anthony Cumia for inspiring him to start his JRE podcast, which has long been counted among the world's top podcasts and earned him lucrative contracts. On that note, he gave credit to Green too.
Rogan indicated that Green had it figured out before most others and was running a successful web show from his house, adding that appearing on it in 2007 changed his life's course by pushing him to start a podcast in 2009:
"I can't thank you enough because being on your show in 2007 really was a big part of the inspiration to do this."
