UFC News: Cain Velasquez Hints On Jon Jones Fight If Daniel Cormier Retires Before Trilogy

Fact or fiction?

What's the story?

Former UFC heavyweight kingpin, Cain Velasquez, has recently shown an inclination towards a heavyweight matchup with current UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, in the case of Daniel Cormier's retirement before a trilogy with Jones.

Cain is set to make his comeback to the Octagon at the UFC on ESPN 1 event against the "Predator," Francis Ngannou, in what will be his return, after a long 30-month hiatus from the sport.

In case you didn't know...

On July 7th, 2018, at UFC 226, the reigning UFC heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier, shocked the world by beating the former 'Baddest Man On The Planet,' Stipe Miocic, via a first-round knockout.

Soon after the fight, Cormier decided to call out Brock Lesnar for a potential championship showdown, in what is foreseen to be one of UFC's biggest pay-per-view event of all time.

However, recent reports from the Nevada State Athletic Commission suggest that Lesnar is yet to pay a fine of $250,000, in regards to his drug test failure, dating back to his UFC 200 super fight against Mark Hunt.

With Lesnar continuing to be within the period of indefinite suspension from the NSAC, the chances of a championship clash with Daniel Cormier, at the moment, seem bleak. Cormier, however, is seemingly open to a rematch with Stipe Miocic, considering the latter has been the longest reigning heavyweight champion in UFC history, with a record three title defences till date. The UFC will be looking to make that rematch happen, in case Brock Lesnar fails to come through with his legal obligations towards the promotion.

The heart of the matter

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, the former heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez, was seen opening up about the possibility of a potential fight with current light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones. Jones recently claimed the 205-pound belt at the UFC 232 event, after his successful outing against the "Mauler," Alexander Gustafsson.

“I hope so,” Velasquez told MMA Fighting “I’ll try to make that happen.”

President of the UFC, Dana White, made an appearance on TMZ Sports, last year, speaking about his willingness for Daniel Cormier to push his retirement, for a further date.

“I think Cormier’s got a couple left in him,” White told TMZ “I would like to see Jones and Cormier fight at heavyweight but right now, Cormier’s team wants him to retire. They want him to retire right now. I hope we can get three more fights out of him.”

What's next?

The UFC and fight fans around the world were witness to the return of Jon Jones and will be expecting the same in the case of Cain Velasquez. Jones has previously expressed his interest in moving up to the division of the big boys, but a heavyweight bout with Cain still seems too premature in the making.
