UFC News: Dustin Poirier talks about Tony Ferguson facing Khabib Nurmagomedov next
What's the story?
Khabib Nurmagomedov has been away from the UFC, ever since the post-fight incidents of UFC 229. Currently, he is awaiting sanctions from the Nevada State Athletic Commission following a hearing. However, in the UFC Lightweight Division, there has been considerable debate about who should be the next person to face the Champion upon his return.
In a recent tweet, one of the top contenders for Khabib Nurmagomedov, Dustin Poirier, admitted that he felt Tony Ferguson should be the next person to get a title shot.
In case you didn't know...
Tony Ferguson has been on a run in the UFC Lightweight Division of late. He went through his opposition like they were nothing, and is currently on an 11-0 streak. He has come close to challenging Khabib in a fight previously on several occasions, but for one reason or other, the two never ended up facing each other. He last competed on UFC 229 in the co-main event, where he defeated Anthony Pettis by TKO.
Dustin Poirier has had some success in the Octagon in his previous fights as well, defeating top names like Eddie Alvarez, Jim Miller, and Anthony Pettis.
The heart of the matter
Dustin 'The Diamond' Poirier showed off his class in a tweet he sent as a reply to a fan. When talking about the next person who should get a title shot, he said that he felt Tony Ferguson deserved the next shot at Khabib Nurmagomedov.
However, he then went on to say that as Khabib was away from the Octagon, and was not likely to compete soon, he was ready for other arrangements to be made. By this message, he hinted that he was ready to take on Tony Ferguson if he wanted a fight.
What's next?
A fight between Tony Ferguson and Dustin Poirier would be a big one for whichever card it featured on. While it is not confirmed yet, this could be something in the works for the near-future.
