UFC News: Dustin Poirier teases rematch with 2018 opponent after not getting Conor McGregor fight
Dustin "The Diamond" Poirier is ready to get right back into action following a loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov this past September at Abu Dabhi in the main event of UFC 242. Poirier had put Nurmagomedov through some adversity (more than The Eagle had faced in years) but ultimately fell short in the third round, getting finished via a rear-naked choke.
There was only respect between the two men and Poirier revealed multiple times that his Doctor told him that a March or April return was realistic. He stated his interest in getting on the Khabib Nurmagomedov-Tony Ferguson card, but as of now, nothing is confirmed.
However, he knows that he's still a minimum of 2-3 wins before getting another title shot. The man who is next in line for a title shot after Tony Ferguson is Justin Gaethje, who is on a 3-fight win streak following his last defeat to none other than Dustin Poirier himself.
It's been over a year and a half since they last fought and Gaethje said that he plans to wait it out to get a title shot (which he likely can get) and he was passed over for a Conor McGregor fight.
Dustin Poirier knows that he needs to get back on top and he took to Twitter to tease a fight against The Highlight in what would be a major rematch. That's the kind of fight that needs a main event or a PPV co-main event and fans would undoubtedly love to see the fight.
Ultimately, it's up to Gaethje to decide whether he wants the rematch. It would be understandable if he denied it as there's currently no incentive for him to take the fight. It won't be surprising to hear him speak out only after April 18th when Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson finishes.
