UFC/MMA News: Floyd Mayweather's team eyes CM Punk warm-up match before potential date with Conor McGregor
What’s the story?
The MMA world is eagerly waiting for the moment to see Floyd "Money" Mayweather finally step inside the octagon. Mayweather has been posting videos on his Instagram off late, teasing his UFC debut, however, nobody has any idea if he is actually going do it.
Recently in an interview, Jeff Mayweather told reporters that his nephew Floyd might whoop CM Punks a** before he fights Connor". Well, if all of this is true, it might be a sensible match for Mayweather Jr. as he has a better chance against the former WWE Superstar than any other known UFC fighter.
In case you didn’t know…
After the much-hyped boxing bout against McGregor, a rematch just seemed logical. However, Floyd's probability of surviving in the Octagon is pretty slim as he has no formal ground game and is not adept at using his legs during a fight.
If he does fight Connor inside the Octagon, the possibility of a serious injury looms large. The notion of Mayweather fighting McGregor in the octagon has generated a host of comical reactions, who believe this would be the easiest knockout in Notorious' career.
The heart of the matter
It was recently announced that the longest reigning WWE Champion in history will get another shot in the UFC after his first-round loss to Mickey Gall. This seems like a realistic proposition for both Floyd and Punk considering the inexperience at play. It will also be CM Punk's biggest payday ever if he fights the biggest draw in boxing history. Punk has been training quite hard after his UFC debut and Dana White recently said that if the former WWE Star wants to give it another shot then he is willing to take the plunge.
What’s next?
We don't think Mayweather will step into the octagon for his debut against Conor. The former WWE Champion is thus an ideal fight if he decides to make the jump. Even if he fights CM Punk, who has been training for the last couple of years, learning a completely new discipline is quite a big ask.
If the fight does materialize, it will be one of the biggest Pay-Per-View draws in history as everybody would pay to see Money" gets whooped inside the steel cage. Reports suggest that Mayweather could sign a half a billion dollar contract for a couple of fights in the UFC.
Author's take
Money flows wherever Floyd Mayweather goes! While facing Punk would garner outrageous PPV buys, hardcore UFC, and staunch fight fans would not take a liking to the promotional tactic.
However, this may be best for UFC's business and growth.
