UFC News: Gegard Mousasi sets his sights on Luke Rockhold
Gegard Mousasi has now won four fights in a row, since 2015, when he lost to Uriah Hall. With another win under his belt, he can now throw himself into the fray for the Middleweight belt. Mousasi has a plan for this, a couple of preferred fights and a time frame to work for them.
"I just heard Luke Rockhold is coming back in February or March, and that’s when I’m planning to fight. I’m going to take a break. It’s too soon for me to fight now. I’m not going to fight anytime sooner, I am going to take my break, and hopefully March. Nothing confirmed,” said Mousasi about next possible bout on Monday’s edition of the MMA Hour.
“I’m looking for a big fight. A big fight like I mean a big name, like Silva. Anderson is a big name. Nick Diaz is a big name. He fought at middleweight, and I’d love to fight him at middleweight.”
Luke Rockhold was forced out of his UFC 101 fight against Ronaldo Jacare Souza, due to a knee injury that left him no choice but to withdraw. Mousasi has already fought Souza twice, with the fighters splitting the points each time. When asked about a rematch, Mousasi said it wasn’t yet time for that.
"But I have one fight left to fight for the belt, I believe. So, I’m going to take the fight when I’m ready. I’m not scared to fight anybody. It just has to be smart. I’d rather it be let’s say Luke Rockhold, someone like that. Because I feel there’s much more to gain. My goal is if I fight Luke Rockhold, and I beat him, I’m the next contender. Fight Luke Rockhold, and get the next shot."
With Yoel Romero looking to challenge Middleweight champion Michael Bisping after he knocked out Chris Weidman, Mousasi is looking for a shot at the winner of Bisping-Romero for the Middleweight Championship as well.
