UFC News: Jose Aldo says he was always the UFC featherweight champion

Jose Aldo is the new UFC featherweight champion

As reported earlier, Conor Mcgregor relinquished his UFC featherweight belt, with Jose Aldo crowned as the new linear champion in the weight class. Speaking to Ufc.com, Brazil, Aldo claimed he has always been the UFC champion. He went on the add his one-punch knockout defeat at UFC 194 against the Irishman, Mcgregor, was only a fluke.

Here’s what the new Featherweight champion had to say

“To me, I have always been the champion. I lost that fight because of a (fluke).”

“I know I could win in a rematch. I knew I would be champion again. It’s not my fault that (McGregor) is a coward, that he was never the champion. I don’t see myself losing to anyone in this weight class or any other,” he added.

Jose Aldo maintains that he would beat Conor Mcgregor in a rematch, provided it takes place, as he believes Mcgregor is ducking the fight and the possible rematch, being one of the reasons he never defended the belt ever.

Aldo also stated in the interview; he will prepare to face the winner of the fight for the interim belt between Pettis and Holloway at UFC 206, irrespective of the outcome, but added would love to fight the Lightweight champion, Mcgregor again in the future.

“Of course I think about this fight,” Aldo said, “and it certainly will happen. I want to defend my belt first, and then I’ll plan on this (McGregor) fight.”

“I don’t care — I’ll be prepared to face whoever wins,” Aldo said of the Pettis-Holloway fight at UFC 206, the main event at Toronto.

“Of course, Pettis has a bigger name; he was champion once, and it would be a bigger fight. But if Holloway wins. It’s fine.”

As Daniel Cormier pulled out of UFC 206, due to an injury to his abdomen, the main event will showcase, Anthony Pettis as he will take on Max Holloway for the UFC interim featherweight belt.

The winner of the fight receives the opportunity for a title shot, setting up a unification fight for the UFC Featherweight Championship against the Brazilian champion, Jose Aldo.
