UFC News: Luke Rockhold pulls out of UFC Fight Night 101 bout with Jacare Souza
The UFC Fight Night 101 card just lost its lustre, as former UFC middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold, has been forced to pull out of his bout with Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza after suffering an undisclosed injury in training camp.
No replacement for the main event has been announced as of yet. However, the UFC has made no announcement on removing Jacare from the card, so it can be assumed that the surging Brazilian will remain on the fight card.
Rockhold and Souza had met once before during their days in Strikeforce, where, the AKA product, Rockhold, defeated Jacare to capture the Strikeforce middleweight championship via unanimous decision in September of 2011.
This would have been Rockhold’s first piece of Octagon action since being downed by current middleweight champ, Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping, in their main event meeting at UFC 199. Rockhold was knocked out by the Brit in the first round of the contest, failing to defend his title for the first time after he won it from Chris Weidman.
‘Jacare’ is coming off of a first-round thrashing of Vitor ‘The Phenom’ Belfort in their co-main event meeting at UFC 198 from Brazil in May.
Prior to his victory over Belfort, Souza suffered his first loss since losing to Rockhold in their initial meeting, when Yoel Romero snapped his eight-fight win streak with a split decision win in their meeting at UFC 194, in December.
Souza has been one of the most dominant 185 pounders in the UFC today and is looking to make a big statement en-route to a potential title shot down the line.
UFC Fight Night 101 is still scheduled to go down live on Fight Pass from the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia on November 27, 2016.
