UFC News: Robert Whittaker claims that he isn't a fan of fighters missing weight and then getting a title shot
What's the story?
There's nothing new to the fact that UFC fighters have been missing weight on a regular occasion throughout the entirety of 2018, however, one man who apparently isn't a fan of 'fighters missing weight and still getting a title shot' is current UFC Middleweight Champion, Robert Whittaker.
In case you didn't know...
Robert Whittaker initially battled top Middleweight fighter Yoel Romero for the Interim UFC Middleweight Title at UFC 217 on the 8th of July, 2018 at UFC 213, after Michael Bisping initially pulled-out of a scheduled title defense in the first place. Whittaker eventually went on to win the Interim UFC Middleweight Title by unanimous decision and became the first Australian and first New Zealand born fighter to hold a UFC title.
A rematch with Yoel Romero took place at UFC 225, this time for the undisputed UFC Middleweight Title and on this occasion, Whittaker once again came out victorious and retained his championship belt after a back-and-forth close contest.
The heart of the matter
During a recent media lunch interview on Monday, UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker claimed that he apparently isn't a big fan of fighters who initially miss weight in the first place and then eventually go on to earn a title shot in the foreseeable future. (H/T: MMA Fighting)
“It’s like me going down to bantamweight, not making weight, winning because I’m much bigger and then getting a title shot. It’s not fair. It’s not fair. Because on the flip side, the guys that are making weight don’t make it easy. It wasn’t easy to cut weight and make weight and do the job. We still had to struggle, we still had to diet weeks out. We’re just more professional at it. We just did it right.”
What's next?
Robert Whittaker is currently slated to be one of the head coaches of the upcoming Ultimate Fighter season 28 opposing Kelvin Gastelum, who will get the next shot at the MW Title.
