On October 6th, 2019, Robert Whittaker made his return to the Octagon for the first time since his rematch against Yoel Romero at UFC 225. Upon his return to the Octagon, Whittaker faced rising middleweight star Israel Adesanya in a title unification bout but things didn't go according to the plan for 'The Reaper' as he ended up losing the fight via a second-round knockout.

The former champion stated that he is not too disappointed with the loss against Adesanya because there were a lot of expectations and self-imposed pressure on 'The Reaper' which he didn't necessarily agree with. (H/T: MMA Mania)
“Yeah I kind of, I didn’t really like it that much. It’s one of those things that, i comes with some pros, but the cons really starting distracting me. There’s a lot of media, a lot of expectations and a lot of self-imposed pressure. It didn’t agree with me super-well."
Further, Whittaker admitted that he always loves being the guy whom people write off as an underdog and he likes the struggle and the challenge to prove his detractors wrong.
“I’ve always been the sort of guy who just likes to fight. I like the challenge, I like the next opponent. I like to work at just how am going to beat you. Another thing is, I love being the underdog. I love people just writing me off like, ‘You’re going to lose.’ I love the struggle.”
