UFC News: Robert Whittaker vs. Jared Cannonier targeted for March event
Heading into the new decade, UFC has some amazing fights lined up for fans around the globe. With spectacular match-ups such as Conor McGregor vs Donald Cerrone and Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson already confirmed for UFC 246 and UFC 249 respectively, the promotion is looking to add a few more exciting fights to their 2020 line-up.
Per ESPN's Ariel Helwani, UFC is considering putting up a combustible middleweight bout between Former champion Robert Whittaker and Jared Cannonier in the promotion's upcoming UFC 248 pay-per-view. (h/t MMA Mania)
On his comeback to the Octagon, Whittaker suffered a heavy defeat against current middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya at UFC 243. The knockout loss was Whittaker's first in the past five years and he said that he is looking to bounce back immediately. A win against the highly touted prospect Cannonier would certainly help 'The Reaper' get back into the thick of things in the division.
Cannonier picked up three wins in his last three fights over the likes of David Branch, Anderson Silva and Jack Hermansson, making him a force to be reckoned with in the middleweight division. A win over the former champion Whittaker will certainly make a good case for him getting a title shot in the near future.
However, Englishman Darren Till recently called Whittaker out for a fight in the former's hometown London and Whittaker seemed interested in the fight too, which casts a shadow of doubt over this match-up.
