Joe Rogan is fascinated by how honeybee colonies work

Joe Rogan has had many insightful conversations on his JRE podcast and his most recent episode is no different as he learned more about honeybee colonies.

Rogan was joined by beekeeper Erika Thompson in episode #1908. She revealed how honeybee colonies work and what eventually happens among the honeybees. Thompson mentioned that the colony knows when a queen is in her final days and that a fight to the death usually takes place, which caught the UFC commentator off guard as he responded:

"Her fairmoons would get weaker and they would prepare for having a new queen and sometimes even have a new queen develop while their old queen is still alive. In the case that you have a colony with an older queen who is failing and a new queen who just emerged from a cell, the queens will fight to the death." (14:21-14:43)

The JRE host was shocked to hear that and mentioned that it's a ruthless lifestyle, saying:

"Wow, a fight to the death. What a ruthless world." (14:52 - 14:56)

Thompson also provided a detailed description of how honeybee colonies operate and what they do in the hive. She noted that they don't typically have a long lifespan, saying:

"The lifespan of a female worker bee varies throughout the years. So in the spring and summer when the bees are working their hardest, female worker bees will only live about six weeks. In the winter when they're not doing quite as much and when we need more bees to make it through the winter, they'll live a little bit long and live about six months." (0:24 - 0:45)

Joe Rogan will be calling the action on the UFC 282 broadcast, along with Jon Anik and UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier.

The commentator and JRE host has reduced his UFC schedule to only domestic pay-per-views so that he can balance his time with the promotion as well as other ventures like his podcast and being a stand-up comedian.

UFC 282 is the final pay-per-view event of 2022 and will be headlined by Jan Blachowicz vs Magomed Ankalaev for the vacant light heavyweight championship. Based on the JRE host calling domestic pay-per-views, it may be a while before fans hear him on the broadcast as the next three UFC pay-per-views are taking place outside the United States.
