When Dana White got emotional about Kobe Bryant and his investment in UFC: "Jordan with the same mentality"
Dana White once became emotional while reminiscing about his acquaintance with Kobe Bryant and the NBA legend's investment in the UFC. The UFC CEO is a widely recognized figure in the sports world and is the key architect behind the success of the MMA promotion.
As a masterful promoter, White has forged relationships with numerous notable figures across different sports. However, many people might not know that one of his most renowned connections was with Bryant.
In 2016, WME-IMG (widely known as Endeavor) fully acquired the UFC. Once the acquisition was finalized, Endeavor met with all their clients. During this time, the late LA Lakers shooting guard decided to invest in the organization, leading to a close friendship with White.
In June 2023, White was featured on the renowned sneaker channel Complex, where he delved into his love for sneakers. During the interview, the 54-year-old businessman spoke about his connection with 'The Black Mamba' and shared:
"I knew him personally. He and I were friends, and he actually invested in the UFC. When Endeavor bought [UFC], they let all their clients come in and take a piece. He took a piece. Not only was he like [Michael] Jordan with the same mentality which I love and respect so much. But, he was an incredible human being."
White further added that he distinctly recalled the moment he learned of Bryant’s passing:
"I’ll never forget where I was and what I was doing when I heard that Kobe died... When all the celebs had to cash out their UFC thing, it was like days before he passed away."

Who held ownership of the UFC before Dana White took over?
The origins of the UFC can be traced back to the combined efforts of fight enthusiast and entrepreneur Art Davie and Brazilian martial arts legend and Gracie jiu-jitsu Grand Master Rorion Gracie. Their partnership led to the inaugural event, UFC 1, which took place in November 1993 at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado.
Subsequently owned by the Semaphore Entertainment Group, the UFC faced significant financial challenges. However, Dana White emerged as a key figure, convincing the Fertitta brothers to purchase the struggling MMA promotion for $2 million in February 2001. This acquisition led to the creation of Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the UFC, with White assuming the role of president.
