How to tame Dreadmare in ARK Survival Ascended

Dreadmare is a standalone DLC creature in ARK Survival Ascended and the second premium tame to be introduced to its "Fantastic Tames" series. This creature will appear on your map occasionally, but you must buy the $5 DLC to tame it. However, once you do that, Dreadmare is a uniquely useful creature for transportation, as it can essentially teleport your pack mule dino without having to worry about carry-weight problems.

In this guide, we'll explain all there is to know about taming and using a Dreadmare in ARK Survival Ascended. Note that Dreadmares are the female variant of the creature, whereas the males are called Dreadstallions. Regardless of sex, the method of finding and taming them is the same.

As ominous creatures of the night, Dreadmares only spawn between 8 pm and 7 am on the Center and Scorched Earth maps. It's unlikely they'll ever be introduced to the Aberration map, and we haven't found any on The Island map so far.

For both The Center and Scorched Earth, they tend to spawn near the outskirts of the map. On Scorched Earth, they're almost exclusively found on the rocky areas as well as on the mesas. Meanwhile, if you're looking for one on the Center, your best bet is checking out the Redwood part of the landmass to the south.

Taming a Dreadmare in ARK Survival Ascended involves a unique altar offering mechanic that's not particularly beginner-friendly. Not only does this process require a lot of combat encounters, but it also requires you to be resourceful since you have to provide very specific materials on demand. So, you should stay away from this ritual until you have become familiar with the game mechanics.

To tame a Dreadmare or Dreadstallion, you have to spot one in the wild and kill it first. No torpor shenanigans, just outright kill it and then loot it to get a Leveled Dreadmare Altar or Dreadstallion Altar item.

Once you have it, place the Altar somewhere away from your base, as there will be a lot of fighting from here on out. If you have access to turrets, it will also be helpful to pop one down next to where you place the altar.

During nighttime (8 pm to 8 am), the Altar activates automatically and asks you for a Tribute. Here's what you need to know about the minigame that ensues:

  • The Altar can ask you for any creature part as a tribute, ranging from a Therizinosaur to a Giga.
  • Once it does, a 5-minute timer will start. You have to present the tribute before the timer runs out.
  • Once you present the tribute, a phantom of the wild Dreadmare will spawn. You have to kill it, at which point it makes some progress on the taming and asks for yet another tribute.
  • The tribute is randomized and will be different every time.

If you fail to provide the tribute before the timer runs out, the Dreadmare spawns anyway, but this time it will also spawn a hostile creature that you'll also have to kill to progress. The creature that it spawns is related to the tribute that was demanded; so if the altar asks for a Giga Heart, it will spawn a Giga for you to fight.

Failing to turn in the tribute also damages the Altar itself. So, if you fail a total of four times in the process, the Altar will be destroyed and you'll get nothing at all.

Some RNG is involved with this tribute system. If you get lucky and get some parts from relatively common creatures, the taming will be faster. The rest of it is just rinse and repeat till the taming bar fills up, at the end of which you'll get to name your newfound Dreamare or Dreadstallion tame in Ark Survival Ascended.

The main draw of taming a Dreadmare in ARK is its Black Hole ability, which lets you send a creature to another dimension, and then recall it at will. However, there's one caveat to consider: the creature's drag weight must be lower than your Dreadmare's weight capacity. If you want to tuck away bigger creatures, you will need to put some points into the Weight stat.

Here are all of the Dreadmare's abilities and their default PC controls:

  • Basic Melee Attack: LMB is a Standard melee bite, RMB does not do anything on its own while on the ground
  • Dark Wind: Hold RMB and tap LMB to cast projectiles that deal damage and siphon health from a creature. Has a large effective range.
  • Terror Shield: Ctrl + LMB gives you a three-second shield that grants 50% damage reduction and casts fear on nearby hostile creatures. 25-second cooldown.
  • Aura of Hate: Ctrl + RMB gives you the Aura of Hate buff that deals lingering damage over time on enemies, gives you extra Health Recovery, and deals some explosive damage when the aura expires. 2-minute cooldown.
  • Black Hole: Press C to transfer allies into the black hole, or to release the ally held within. 4-second cooldown.
