Luma Island mining guide
In Luma Island, mining is just as essential as farming. While exploring the caves in different biomes, you will find various gems and minerals that you can use to upgrade your gear, tools, and more. However, mining can be quite risky, especially if you don’t have a basic idea of how mines work in the game.
In this guide, we have shared everything you need to know about exploring caves, using torches, and mining, in Luma Island.
How to start mining in Luma Island
To begin mining in Luma Island, you’ll need a few essential tools. Your Pickaxe is necessary for mining ores and gems, while Torches are vital to light the caves. The latter can either be crafted at a Simple Workbench using Twigs and Resin, or purchased from the Stonemason’s Shop.
Upgrading your tools and Whip is highly recommended, as the latter is crucial for defending against cave threats like spiders. Advanced Torches from later areas provide better light radii, longer duration, and more per craft, making them a good investment. Before going into any caves, always make sure you have stocked up on Torches.

How to explore caves and mine ores in Luma Island
Caves in Luma Island are very dark and dangerous, with light only near the entrances. You will find chests and gem veins inside them. To navigate safely, set down Torches, as standing in darkness will teleport you back to the entrance. Torches remain in place until the mine is reset, and can be relit by simply running through them.
Mining ores and gems is straightforward — equip your Pickaxe, approach a vein, and hold the respective input to break it. Ore veins sometimes emit a faint shine, helping guide you in unlit areas. All caves also contain Charcoal, alongside specific resources unique to each location.
Mine locations and resources
Each region of Luma Island has its own cave with distinct ores and gems:
- Farm Mines: Copper, Bronze Rubble, Mountain Crystal, Tiger’s Eye, Kyanite.
- Forest Mines: Iron, Silver Rubble, Pyrite, Bismuth, Crocoite. Beware of poison clouds from exploding rocks.
- Mountain Mines: Moonstone, Gold Rubble, Fluorite, Azurite, Uvarovite. Watch out for glowing rocks that explode after a few seconds.
- Jungle Mines: Volcanic Ore, Platinum Rubble, Sunset Fire Opal, Ruby, Diamond. Hazards include both poison clouds and explosive rocks.
Later mines often contain earlier ores at reduced rates, making them a good alternative for farming lower-tier materials.

What are the enemies and hazards you will face while mining in Luma Island?
Mining comes with risks, primarily from spiders and environmental hazards. Spiders spawn periodically or when mining gems, moving quickly once they spot you. They can be stunned or killed using a Whip. If caught in their web, you’ll be teleported out of the cave. For players uncomfortable with spiders, Arachnophobia Mode can be enabled in the options menu to replace them with less threatening visuals.
Occasionally, ghosts may appear, especially at night. They behave similarly to spiders, but are easier to defeat. Additionally, poison clouds in the Forest and Jungle Mines and exploding rocks in the Mountain and Jungle Mines can cause significant damage.
How to reset mines in Luma Island
Each mine has reset buttons that can be used to replenish ores and gems. Pressing one gives you 60 seconds to exit the cave, after which the mine resets. Keep in mind that resetting removes all placed Torches, so only do it after fully clearing a mine.
For efficient exploration, use Torches sparingly, clear the mine completely, and only reset when necessary. If you need a quick way out, standing in darkness will teleport you back to the entrance.
