Will Path of Exile 2 have crossplay and cross-save?

As per the latest developments, Path of Exile 2 players can rest assured that the game will have crossplay and cross-save enabled when it launches. The community has long requested crossplay and coss-save features, considering countless players have accounts on multiple devices.

Bringing them together under a singular account has been a challenge, but a recent Path of Exile update has made the first steps possible for everyone. It remains to be seen how that update will translate over to Path of Exile 2.

How will crossplay and cross-save work in Path of Exile 2?

According to Grinding Gear Games, crossplay and cross-save are slated to work seamlessly in Path of Exile 2, and players will be able to swap out their accounts at will. In a recent blog post regarding the newly added features for the account system, the studio outlined key details that will migrate to the newer title.

First and foremost, crossplay and cross-save will be available for all platforms, albeit with some caveats. PlayStation players will need PlayStation Plus subscriptions to play online with others, which is a bummer considering both Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2 are free-to-play. Similarly, Xbox players will require Xbox Game Pass Core or Ultimate to play the game.

Furthermore, after merging profiles, players will have their platform-specific accounts turned into sub-accounts. They will be able to select between sub-accounts and play the characters listed therein. This feature will function for different PC platforms as well. To avoid naming issues, GGG has introduced numerical discriminators to solve conflicts while merging accounts.

Regarding microtransactions, the studio has stated that it is a tricky process, and that it has taken adequate measures to simplify things as much as possible. For starters, microtransactions (MTX) are tied to individual sub-accounts and players can ask support to move all of their MTX to one sub-account as a one-time transfer.

Second, PlayStation players will not be able to use MTX from other platforms and vice versa. This will not be a problem for Xbox and PC platform-specific sub-accounts.

Although these changes are meant for Path of Exile 2, some features like numerical discriminators and sub-accounts will be available for Path of Exile as well. However, cross-play, and likewise cross-progression, will not be available for Path of Exile 1.

More information will be available once Path of Exile 2's Early Access comes online on December 6.
