Path of Exile 2 server status: Is it down?

As the hour of Path of Exile 2's Early Access release is upon us, most players waiting on queue have the same question: are the servers up? There have been some last-minute delays, and the servers came online nearly 90 minutes after its slated release time has been reached. The game's twitter handle has opened up an official thread to openly communicate the ongoing server status which you can track here.

In this article, we'll try to provide up-to-date information on the servers as GGG gears up to tackle the launch-day traffic of Path of Exile 2.

Are Path of Exile 2 servers online yet?

At the time of writing, Path of Exile 2 servers are online. However, it's uncertain whether you can have a stable session at the moment.

Since the game's release, the servers have gone back and forth between brief periods of uptime and being taken down to fix a critical bug "which caused multiple characters to have the same character ID." This means multiple account-wide registration issues, and on each instance of the bug, GGG has to wipe user data and restart the realm to prevent further complications.

The technical issue is related to the newly acquired database shards to keep up with player numbers, and the developers are currently addressing the problem at the time of writing.

As such, long queues and some technical issues will likely be a big part of the day-one experience.

Some day-one server disconnection woes are well within expectations, as the Early Access player count is now expected to be far above one million according to key sales. GGG Game Director Jonathan Rogers has previously expressed his reservations regarding how well-equipped the instance managers are to handle the currently expected player numbers. As he announced the million-sales milestone earlier today in a dev vlog, he also mentioned:

"I do have some concerns about issues with the backend. We quite frankly don't know what our backend services are going to be able to handle as we go above a million users. Now, we've added more database shards, scaling everything we have up as far as it'll go. But we're really not sure what kind of limits we might hit."

In other news, the Path of Exile website remains crashed, effectively locking out some PC players trying to download the game client to install it without Steam.
