Path of Exile 2: The Devourer boss guide

The Devourer is Path of Exile 2’s second major boss fight in Act I, and if you aren’t careful, he’ll send you back to the checkpoint in a hurry. Hiding at the end of the Mud Burrow, The Devourer is a giant worm that constantly burrows and tries to get out of the way of your attacks. While it seems easy enough, it could still trip up beginning players.

This fight in particular slowed me down because I had not taken the time to swap to a control scheme that worked for me — controller instead of keyboard and mouse. The dodge mechanic felt awkward on a keyboard and mouse setup. However, if you’re struggling with The Devourer in Path of Exile 2, we’re here to help.

How to beat The Devourer in Path of Exile 2

The Devourer’s primary method of attack in Path of Exile 2 is to spit a gross mucus at you. This is a good time to learn the dodge mechanic anyway. Whether walking away or dodging rolling away, it’s an attack you don’t want to get hit with. It often does this several times in a row, so even if you’re rolling in a particular direction, it will keep trying to nail you, instead of just targeting one space in the room.

After a few attacks, it will burrow part of its body into the ground, popping up at another location. It pops up pretty quickly, so stay mobile and away from The Devourer in Path of Exile 2. If you’re nearby, it does hit you for splash damage, so keep that in mind. It will likely repeat the pattern of a few spit attacks, and another burrow as well.

If it glows green, definitely avoid the attack, because not only does it hit hard, this spit also inflicts poison — this completely ignores any Energy Shield you might have up. One thing that also makes the Devourer tricky in Path of Exile 2 is that it stays burrowed — those places it moved earlier stay there, so you have fewer spots to move around.

Around the 50-60% mark, it’s going to start spitting up Flesh Larva to fight you as well. These are relatively weak, but don’t let them group up on you too badly. This is a great fight to have some AOE attacks, that’s for sure.

At this point, another head will also pop up from one of the burrow locations, and it will also spit at you, as well as summon Larva. That’s another thing that makes the fight tricky but also gives you another target to fight. If you approach too close to the body’s head, it will also swipe at you with a little arm, but it’s easy to avoid.

It’s important to only fight the head though — the many coils of its body can’t be harmed. Those are just there to be in the way. Instead, focus on whichever head is closest to you, with your strongest skills. It’s not mobile, so if you have ground-based AOE attacks, they come in handy here. When the boss is around 25%, it will also add one more attack to its arsenal — it will spit globs of acid in an arc, which definitely needs to be avoided. It inflicts poison.

They don’t hit incredibly far away from the main body, but still, don’t get hit if you can avoid it. The Devourer will also start smashing its head into the ground more often for a larger splash damage radius. Once you’ve defeated it, return to camp and talk to Renly for a reward.
