Path of Exile 2 Treacherous Ground quest guide (slay the Devourer)

Path of Exile 2’s early game teaches quite a few lessons, and one of those tutorials is the Treacherous Ground side quest. While optional, it’s highly recommended. Newcomers to the ARPG genre will learn the importance of exploring the map and completing dungeons. It features a relatively strong boss, which continues to impress the notion of using the dodge roll.

You can find this quest early in Path of Exile 2’s Act 1, but you can come back to it anytime if you feel the need. It will have you exploring the initial map, and clearing your first dungeon in Grinding Gear Game’s new hit ARPG.

How to complete Treacherous Ground in Path of Exile 2

After you complete Mercy for the Miller in Path of Exile 2, you can immediately pick up Treacherous Ground. While Una directs you toward main scenario quests, completing this side quest is just as useful to complete. You always need more exp and gear in PoE 2, and Treacherous Ground can certainly put lots of enemies in your way to slaughter. Below are your primary objectives.

Objectives

  • Search Clearfell
  • Explore the Mud Burrow
  • Speak to Renly

The Search Clearfell objective is pretty self-explanatory in Path of Exile 2’s Treacherous Ground quest. You have to find the Mud Burrow, enter it, and defeat the Devourer — the boss of that lair. While exploring, you may also discover the next zone needed for the main scenario quest.

Additionally, you’ll encounter an optional boss — Beira of the Rotten Pack. Fight her to claim a useful stat-boosting quest reward - more Cold Resistance.

You’ll find her in a frozen area of the Clearfell map with a Checkpoint nearby. Thankfully, it will also be easy to locate the Mud Burrow. You’ll likely have a Waypoint near it, and the path leading to the underground dungeon has a muddy path leading to it.

Explore the Mud Burrow requires you to explore the dungeon and defeat the boss. There are a lot of long, winding tunnels, but it’s relatively straightforward. However, this tutorial quest also shows you how dangerous the world is. In this dungeon, Flesh Larva, and Mud Simulacra enemies will pop out of the walls to fight you.

Take the time to clear the whole dungeon, as it contains several treasure chests and breakable eggs that may hold valuable loot. In general, anytime you see a breakable thing, you’ll want to break it.

Eventually, you’ll get to the Devourer itself, in a room known as the Vile Nest. There’s a Checkpoint right in front of it as well. The boss is pretty straightforward. Don’t get caught in its slam attacks or poison blasts, dodge its spit, and slay the Larva it summons. It won’t take too much time to beat.

Once you do, return to Clearfell Encampment and speak to Renly to complete Treacherous Ground. He’ll grant you an Uncut Support Gem as a token of gratitude.
