Riot MMO co-founder says the game is "making a lot of momentum"
It appears rumors of the upcoming Riot MMO have been greatly exaggerated. There hasn't been much information about this mysterious project, but during the League of Legends World’s broadcast, former professional League of Legends player and streamer Caedrel extracted some interesting information from Marc Merrill, the co-founder of Riot Games. Better known as Tryndamere, the game developer briefly chatted with Caedrel about the upcoming game.
We still don’t know much despite Marc Merrill’s statement during the League World’s broadcast, but one thing is certain: it is still under development and the team is working hard not to disappoint the fans.
Speaking on the progress of the game, Marc Merrill said:
"I really think the team has a great direction now, and is making a lot of momentum."
Riot MMO is still on the way, according to co-founder Marc Merrill
Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill gave fans a little bit of an update on the Riot MMO during League World’s 2024. When Caedrel asked the chat what they wanted the co-founder to answer, the screen was flooded with “MMO.” This indicates that fans (including us) are still incredibly excited by the prospect of a League of Legends MMO.
While Caedrel didn’t ask anything specific about the upcoming Riot MMO, he did question Marc Merrill about the progress of the upcoming game.
Here’s what the co-founder of Riot Games had to say:
“Well, we’re workin’ hard on it. You know, it’s the project I personally spend the most amount of time on. I really think the team has a great direction now, and is making a lot of momentum. It’s something where we know the expectations that we have and we’re going to, we’re going to really try not to disappoint.”
This comes as good news, considering what we heard earlier this year. It was revealed in March 2024 that the Riot MMO was scrapping what they had worked on thus far, and was changing the direction of the game's development.
Marc Merrill published a series of tweets about this, including concerning statements that the public development diary will go dark/silent for a long time — likely several years.
That said, Marc Merrill's statement doesn’t give us much to go off on, other than the fact that the game is still being worked on. However, the radio silence had many assuming the possible title was canceled, which does not appear to be the case.
The world of Runeterra is a rich, lore-filled world, and there’s so much that can be done with it, outside of the confines of League of Legends. That’s one reason fans are so excited about the concept of a League of Legends/Riot MMO.
While we don’t know much at this time, we’ll keep you updated about the forthcoming project and any developments concerning it.
