The T1 Handmade SMG is a weapon that is locked behind the Level 1 Workbench. You can unlock it in two ways.

Tech tree

You can use the tech tree in the Level 1 Workbench to unlock the T1 Handmade SMG. Simply locate it on the ladder and feed scrap to the Workbench to eventually unlock the blueprint for the weapon. This method is the easiest, provided you have a huge supply of Scrap in your hands.

Looking for a weapon in the open world

If you do not want to spend a lot of Scrap researching through the Level 1 tech tree, you can try looking for the T1 Handmade SMG in the open world.

You could get your hands on the weapon through standard crates, military crates, and even elite crates. Your best bet to get it through crates would be to contest medium- to high-tier Monuments, such as Launch Site, Oil Rig, or even Military Tunnels.

SKS

The SKS is locked behind the Level 3 Workbench. While you can opt for either of the methods above to unlock this weapon, we recommend you use the convenience of the Workbench Level 3 tech tree to do so.

Unlike the T1 SMG, which is located near the end of the tech tree of the Level 1 Workbench, the SKS is more easily accessible and does not require as much Scrap.

Alternatively, if you are lucky enough to find such a rare gun in one of the military or elite crates, you can directly research it on a Research Table using 125 Scrap.

Crafting guide for the T1 Handmade SMG and SKS in Rust

T1 Handmade SMG

As mentioned earlier, the T1 Handmade SMG is part of the Workbench Level 1. Naturally, the weapon is pretty cheap to craft. It is the perfect tool for early-game combat and will allow you to defeat enemies in large numbers, providing you with improved chances of survival in the cruel world of Rust.

Here's what you will need to craft the T1 Handmade SMG:

  • 5 HQM
  • 200 Metal Fragments
  • 1 Metal Spring

The weapon needs 30 seconds to craft, and you must be in the vicinity of a Workbench Level 1 to make it.

SKS

The SKS is a relatively late-game weapon in contrast to the T1 SMG. As stated above, it is part of the Workbench Level 3 arsenal and has steeper demands when compared to Tier-1 weapons.

Luckily, unlike its other Workbench Level 3 counterparts, such as the Assault Rifle, and the MP5A4 in Rust, crafting it is comparatively cheaper and easier.

Here's what you will need should you choose to craft the SKS:

  • 200 Metal Frags
  • 12 HQM
  • 1 Semi-auto Body
  • 2 Metal Springs
