Throne and Liberty: How to defeat Charging Gatekeeper (Taedal Floor 1)

Charging Gatekeeper is the first Secret Dungeon boss you have to face in Throne and Liberty. This boss unlocks after reaching the end of Adventure Codex Chapter 3 (Veterans Never Die) as part of the Appendix Ashien's Strange Painting. While most bosses function as a DPS check, this one is a mechanic check— so, you can face it right away once you get to the appropriate level.

Here's everything you need to know to defeat Charging Gatekeeper, who completes the first floor of Taedal's Tower in Throne and Liberty.

Throne and Liberty Secret Dungeon Floor 1: Charging Gatekeepr boss guide

You must be lvl 15 to face Charging Gatekeeper in Throne and Liberty. The boss is quite durable for this level, sitting at 9067 fixed HP. Since all of his basic attacks are melee, you can expect to have an overall easier time kiting with a ranged class.

However, he is overall the easiest to defeat with a Sword and Shield class, as there are a lot of Fury attacks you can guard to gain HP and stagger the boss quite frequently. Ultimately, it's a matter of knowing and reacting to these attacks fast enough.

Charging Gatekeeper Attack pattern: Special moves to look out for

Basic Attack pattern: Charging Gatekeeper has two regular melee swings he can chain, both while standing and running. At times, he will execute the first attack and stop. More frequently, it will be a one-two swing, at which point you should look out for his basic Fury Attack. To complete the basic 3-attack combo, he will pirouette for his third swing, which you can perfect-parry to stagger him. The basic Fury Attack only happens when he's stationary.

Ground Slam: The boss can slam the ground ahead of him in a wave of damage that goes directly forward. He will always repeat this move one more time, and can even move before the second Ground Slam if you're kiting him. Although this cannot be parried, you can easily dodge it by moving laterally twice.

Hook: If you're trying to kite him and maintain distance, Charging Gatekeeper can hook you into melee range. This has a very obvious tell, where it's somewhere similar to the ground slam but with longer animation and a Fury icon, letting you parry it to cancel the hook and maintain distance.

Charge: As the name of the boss suggests, he can dash towards you to close the gap when you're within range. Since this is a Fury Attack, you can parry it to mitigate the knockdown. However, this is not as dangerous till the second phase, discussed below.

Charge Combo: When you get him below 50% health, Charging Gatekeeper will eventually start glowing red-hot. In this phase, he is more likely to do the Charge move and does it up to thrice in a row. If you fail to parry this Fury attack, you can get chain-stunned for a while, letting him land a few hits.

General fighting strategy for Charging Gatekeeper

The basic strategy for Charging Gatekeeper for a melee class is to be stationary to make him proc his basic 3-hit combo more often, letting you self-sustain your HP from the Fury Attack. Once he gets to his second phase, you have to either start moving out of the way the moment when the charge starts or get ready to react well with a parry.

For a ranged class, the general idea is to kite to completely nullify his basic melee swings. However, watch out for his Hook combo, which you must parry instead of rolling. In the second phase, you must be even more evasive to fish out his Charge Combo, at which point there will be downtime, allowing you to continue your basic hit-and-run strategy.
