5 facts about Daniel Suarez you should know

Daniel Suarez currently competes in the NASCAR Cup Series for Trackhouse Racing. He has two Cup wins over eight years in the series. The No. 99 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 driver finished this season 12th in the final driver standings and earned one win.

Suarez has been racing in a stock car for about 16 years and started with the NASCAR mini stocks series in Mexico.

Here, we look at five facts to know about him.

#1 Suarez was born in Mexico

32-year-old Suarez is a native of Mexico. He was born in Monterrey, the capital city of the state of Nuevo León. He moved to the US at 19 to pursue racing and learned English by watching cartoons because he could not afford lessons.

His dad also sold his business to support Suarez’s dream to race in the US. He is now a dual citizen of Mexico and the US


#2 Suarez raced in NASCAR's Mexico Series for seven years

Daniel started racing in the NASCAR Mexico Series in 2009 and has 10 wins in the series, accumulated between 2011 and 2014. He will next race in his home country during the 2025 Cup Series race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez track in Mexico City.


#3 He was the first non-US driver to win a major NASCAR championship

Daniel Suarez won the 2016 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship with Joe Gibbs Racing. He thus became the first driver born outside the US to win a major NASCAR championship.

Suarez beat Kyle Busch in his No. 19 car and won the first race that year at Michigan International Speedway. He also became the first Mexican-born driver to win a NASCAR national touring series race. Suarez currently has a total of three wins over seven years in the series.


#4 Daniel Suarez is married to the daughter of Formula 1 World Champion

Suarez married Julia Piquet in her hometown of Brasilia this year in April. Piquet is the daughter of three-time Formula 1 World Champion Nelson Piquet. The couple first met in 2012 and got engaged ten years later in 2022.

He also raced in the NASCAR Brasil Series’ Special Edition after his wedding.


#5 Suarez won his first Cup Series race at Sonoma

Driving for Trackhouse Racing, Daniel Suarex won his first Cup race at Sonoma Raceway in 2022 and in the process, became the first Mexican-born driver to do so. His latest win came at Atlanta Motor Speedway in February this year. He beat Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch by 0.003 seconds and 0.007 seconds, respectively.

Suarez will return to Trackhouse Racing in the No. 99 Chevrolet for the 2025 season.
