Denny Hamlin's fiancée advises Joe Gibbs to display 'artefacts that hindered us' after throttle issue complicates title pursuit

NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin's long-time partner and fiancée Jordan Fish reacted to a video that showed the small piece of rubber that hindered Hamlin's chances at Sunday's playoff race.

Hamlin, who is 18 points below the cut-line, will have to start the next playoff race at Martinsville Speedway from the back of the field. During practice on Saturday, a stuck throttle caused his No. 11 Toyota to crash into the wall. The Joe Gibbs Racing (JDR) driver needs to win the Martinsville race to qualify for the Championship 4 race at Pheniox.

When the team posted a video showing the cause of the crash, Jordan Fish joked about creating a display of artefacts at JGR.

"I think we need a lil collection of artefacts to put in display at JGR called “items that hindered us” I think this little ball of gunk and the “piece of tape” would make the cut," Fish commented on the below video.

Before the throttle issue caused Hamlin to lose control and hit the SAFER barrier while speeding into Turn 3, he had the fastest lap time of 19.957 seconds.

"I tried to do everything I can to not hit head-on" - Denny Hamlin on Martinsville practice crash

Denny Hamlin raced only 33 laps during the practice for Sunday’s Xfinity 500. He spoke about the crash and explained how the small track and the stuck throttle made it hard to slow down. He slammed backward into the wall and his car was badly damaged. But the No. 11 team will fix it for the race at the 0.526-mile speedway.

His last win in Martinsville was nine years ago in 2015, and he has won four other races at NASCAR's shortest track (2008, 2009, 2010-twice).

"I tried to do everything I can to not hit head-on. At that point, I was trying to do everything that I can to keep the thing spun around so that I can try to get the car to slide forward instead of backward, but obviously, with this small track, it’s hard to keep it off the wall...The car didn’t slow down, and the throttle hung on me," Denny Hamlin said (via NASCAR on NBC).

Martin Truex Jr. won the pole at Martinsville with a lap at 95.951 mph. Denny Hamlin's teammate Christopher Bell, who has a 29-point lead in the elimination race, qualified in 16th place. Bell has three wins and 14 top-five finishes this season.

Joey Logano and Tyler Reddick who are locked into the championship four, qualified 12th and 31st respectively.
