Kyle Larson recently wrapped his 35th Cup Series race weekend at Martinsville Speedway. The #5 Hendrick Motorsports driver began his 500-lap dash from ninth place on the grid and surged to a third-place finish, behind his teammate Chase Elliot.

However, despite leading 71 laps and posting his 14th top-5 of the season, the 2021 Cup Series champion fell short in points and got eliminated from the playoffs. His teammate William Byron however, got his playoff ticket after NASCAR penalized Christopher Bell for wall-riding on the final lap and removed the JGR driver from the title fight.

Kyle Larson comments on NASCAR's playoff format following Martinsville heartbreak

Kyle Larson has etched six wins this season and his latest triumph at the Charlotte Roval guaranteed his Round of 8 entry. However, the #5 Chevy driver's 11th and 13th place finishes at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway, respectively, jeopardized his Championship 4 fate.

Moreover, both playoff drivers Joey Logano and Tyler Reddick's wins in the Round of 8 resulted in two remaining Championship 4 spots, with six drivers eyeing it, making the Martinsville race more challenging. As a result, Larson's podium finish was rendered useless for advancement.

Since the new playoff format was introduced in 2014, it got varied reactions. Some drivers were content with the system while others voiced their concerns. Larson however, didn't criticize the knockout system but became critical of his Round of 8 performance.

The HMS driver said, via Frontstretch:

"Two unfortunate races, at Vegas, all the issues we had there and Homestead with the flat, just the damage underneath the car kind of made it a fight...I don't want to say there's anything wrong with the format, you just can't have two bad races in the round of eight," Larson said.

The current format has divided the 10-race slate into four rounds, with three races each, except for the final battle. Moreover, the winner of any playoff race gets automatic advancement to the next round, and four drivers are eliminated after every third race
