"It’s the journey" - Joey Logano opens up on mindset after punching Championship 4 ticket in Las Vegas
After winning the Round of 8 opener at Las Vegas, Joey Logano booked his spot in the Championship 4 this season. This was Logano's third win of the year, and his second in the playoffs. However, despite the wins at the crucial point in the season, the Team Penske driver mentioned that he's not content yet.
Speaking on Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s podcast, Logano opened up on where he finds himself with regards to his hunt for another NASCAR title. The 2x Cup champion explained why his season has been full of ups and downs and how the #22 team has seemingly found its footing at a crucial juncture of the season.
"I think we’re in a good spot. I don’t think you ever look at it and say, ‘Man, we’re where we wanna be.’ Because I don’t think that goal is ever achieved right? It’s the journey trying to reach perfection. Is the season long enough to where you go through ups and downs? Absolutely. There was times throughout the year where we had speed but we couldn’t put a race together. Times in the year that we had no speed and gosh, we were executing well but it wasn’t good enough. And it seems like right now we’re able to do both".
Logano felt that most teams and drivers tend to panic when faced with a difficult situation, but added that this was where he and his team thrived the most and looked for solutions.
"It seems like that drives us. I don’t know why that’s what it is, but boy, we don’t want to suck. We just are able to find stuff. Everyone goes to work. Everyone keeps their head down and grinding and we’ve found ourselves in good situations and here we are once again in a solid position to go out and have a real chance at a championship," he added.
Joey Logano looking ahead to the race at Phoenix in a bid for a third title
After reserving his spot in Phoenix with two races left in the playoffs, Joey Logano opened up on how he'd approach Homestead and Martinsville. While Logano's rivals in the Round of 8 would still need to win or point their way into the remaining three spots in Phoenix, the 2x Cup champion can begin his preparation for the biggest race of the season.
"The focus has to be on Phoenix. If we earned that right to to be able to do that, it would be a total waste if we did not take advantage of that, right? I mean, it would be, it would be horrible to think to not use that. So that's going to come at a price of something and go be at a price of, you know, maybe these next few races," Logano said (via SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on X)
The #22 driver further said that in his opinion, every team and driver has an equal chance of getting their hands on the trophy, which is why he wants to focus on gaining an advantage for Phoenix now that he has two races in hand.
