"Same thing I've done the other two" - $24M-worth Joey Logano outlines fate of 2024 NASCAR championship trophy if he wins
Joey Logano has shared his plans for the NASCAR Cup Series championship trophy if he wins the title this year. He also revealed a fun practice that he followed after his previous two wins.
Logano is looking to win his third NASCAR Cup Series championship at Phoenix Raceway this Sunday. The No. 22 Team Penske driver was eliminated from the playoffs before Alex Bowman was disqualified at Charlotte Roval. And a smart strategy in Las Vegas earned him qualification to the Championship 4 early.
In a recent interview with Bob Pockrass, the 34-year-old said that if he wins, he will let his team keep the trophy for a week to do whatever they want, even if it gets scratched.
"I know what we will do though is the same thing I've done the other two: I let the guys take it. The guys will get the trophy, and everybody on the team gets it for a week. They can do whatever they want with it. I don't care. Go have fun, take pictures, take it to your hometown... I know it comes back with scratches, but we all won it together," Logano said.
The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion also shared a funny story about his No. 22 fueler driving with the trophy in the back of a side-by-side vehicle.
"I've seen some crazy things. I was driving home one winter and Nick Hensley, our gas man, had it in the back of his side-by-side heading to a Christmas tree burning party after Christmas. There goes the cup trophy on the back of a side-by-side down 150. You know, like, I'm like, 'geez,'" he added.
The Championship race is set for Phoenix Raceway this Sunday, November 10.
"You have that advantage over the rest of the guys" - Joey Logano on early preparations for Phoenix
NASCAR's Cup Series championship race will wrap up the 36-race schedule this weekend. Team Penske's Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney, along with Tyler Reddick, won in the Round of 8. Whereas, William Byron earned the fourth spot in Championship 4 after a controversial race last weekend at Martinsville.
Logano said that being locked in early gave him a big advantage over the other drivers for the final race.
"Anytime you can get locked in early and start thinking about the championship race before everybody else… It's a little bit more relaxed when you get to Phoenix... It really can feel a lot more like just a race and that you're actually prepared for, and you have that advantage over the rest of the guys,” Joey Logano said via AZ Central.
Joey Logano has had six top-10 finishes at the one-mile track in Phoenix in his last 10 starts.
