"We support him being an American citizen" - Allison Thorson makes opinion clear on NASCAR's $12,500 fine for Ty Majeski over missed duties to vote
Allison Thorson, daughter of ThorSport Racing co-owners Duke and Rhonda Thorson, spoke about the team's driver, Ty Majeski, being fined by NASCAR earlier this week. The driver of the #98 ThorSport Racing truck was fined $12,500 for missing media obligations ahead of Friday night's Truck Series championship race at the Phoenix Raceway.
Majeski's absence was for a reason, as the 30-year-old traveled back to his home state of Wisconsin to cast his vote in the 2024 presidential election. Here's what Majeski was quoted as saying by the Associated Press:
“I felt like I needed to do my duty as a U.S. citizen to vote. My team owners and I, we all made the decision to exercise that right."
It was reported that Majeski discussed the matter with his team and they agreed that he would vote on Tuesday. In Friday's post-race press conference, following Majeski's victory in the race and the 2024 CRAFTSMAN Truck Series championship, Allison addressed the situation.
The daughter of the team's co-owners said they have great relationships with their drivers, and while media obligations are important, so is Election Day. Allison added:
"Let's focus on, first of all, we are all lucky to live in the United States of America and we get the right to vote. If it wasn't that we didn't live in America, there's a reason why everyone's coming here and there's a reason why there's so many fans of NASCAR. First, we're going to respect his rights as a U.S. citizen. It's unfortunate that there's media on the same day as Election Day, but Election Days don't happen every day."
Allison went on to further support Majeski's decision, suggesting to NASCAR that they should view the driver as a proud American, and that he would have been available for media on any other occasion.
"Ty, I know, he also did media via Zoom, phone calls that day. If you look at our record with all our other drivers, we're definitely present and we agree about being present and being a united force with all our organizations. We support him being an American citizen, too," she said.
Ty Majeski won Friday's race at Phoenix to become the 2024 CRAFTSMAN Truck Series champion
Ty Majeski was able to put the controversy aside at the Phoenix Raceway as he wheeled his way to victory to become the 2024 CRAFTSMAN Truck Series champion. Majeski outran Corey Heim, Christian Eckes, and Grant Enfinger to win the title.
Majeski claimed his first career championship in his second Championship 4 appearance and in just his third full-time season in the series. It marked the sixth Truck Series championship for ThorSport Racing, which is the most for any team.
