Of all the car brands that have competed in NASCAR's three main series, only nine manufacturers have won a championship title. "We’ll look at everything" - NASCAR's VP on investigation of final lap actions at Martinsville
NASCAR will investigate the actions of several teams in the closing laps of Sunday’s Round of 8 race. The No. 1 Chevrolet of Ross Chastain, No. 3 Chevrolet of Austin Dillon, and No. 23 Toyota of Bubba Wallace are all under review.
In the final laps at Martinsville Speedway, Chastain and Dillon ran side-by-side behind William Byron and blocked others to help him. Wallace’s car also slowed down which allowed Bell to try the banned “Hail Melon” wall ride move to pass. After a 27-minute review, NASCAR chose to advance Byron to the Championship 4 and ruled Bell’s move as intentional.
According to Elton Sawyer, NASCAR's senior vice president of competition, the focus was on Christopher Bell's wall ride on the final corner. He said:
"We’ll look at everything. As I said earlier, we want to go back, as we would have done anyway. We’ll get back, we’ll take all the data, video. We’ll listen to in-car audio. We’ll do all that, as we would any event.”
NASCAR also penalized Bell for his move which cost him a playoff spot. Bell could not appeal the decision because NASCAR does not allow appeals on certain race violations. The “Hail Melon” move was banned before 2023 for safety reasons.
Byron finished in sixth place and earned a spot in the Championship 4 by just one point. The championship race is set for Phoenix Raceway on Sunday.
