3 cut candidates on Bears roster ahead of NFL training camp

This is a huge season for the Chicago Bears. With quarterback Caleb Williams on the roster, they are back in the business of competing for a playoff spot, especially with the strong roster they've assembled in the past two years.

There are a few holes that need to be addressed, but overall, there's a lot of reason for Bears fans to be excited. They'll have to fight a long way to win the division over the Detroit Lions, but the blueprint is very interesting.

Here's a closer look at three players who might not survive the 53-man cuts at the end of the month.

3 cut candidates on Bears roster ahead of NFL training camp

Candidate #1 - Travis Homer, RB

His numbers are pretty great and he's also a versatile player who can be a good returner. The problem for Travis Homer is that he doesn't have the physical shape needed to play in the NFL, and as a result, he's often injured.

The Bears have added expensive players to the roster and they also spent a bit of money in signing D'Andre Swift to bolster the position. As such, Homer would be a candidate to cut - Roschon Johnson and Khalil Herbert will be above him on the depth chart as well.

Candidate #2 - Tyson Bagent, QB

Bagent was a cool story in 2023 as an undrafted player who got to start a primetime game for Chicago, but he simply doesn't have what it takes to make it in the league. With Caleb Williams taking things over, the Bears were also able to upgrade its quarterback room with backup Brett Rypien.

There will be a place for Bagent on an NFL roster, and it could even be in Chicago as a practice squad player. But don't expect him to make the cut.

Candidate #3 - Dante Pettis, WR

Pettis' career has been nothing short of a disappointment. He was drafted with huge expectations by the San Francisco 49ers but failed to make an impact, and he couldn't change his fortunes while playing with the New York Giants.

Pettis signed with the team for the offseason but the receiving group is pretty deep. He's not going to make the cut unless a miracle happens.
